Stacking starts...

On August 9th, the exterior walls of the lower level of the house started to take shape as the first of the ICE* foam blocks for the insulated concrete walls were stacked. A great deal of care is taken at this point to compensate for any areas where the foundation footings are not perfectly level.

* ICE (Insulating Concrete Efficiently) is the brand of insulated concrete forms used for our home. For more information about insulated concrete construction, see Technologies.

Galvanized "Shiny 90" was first anchored to create a channel for the blocks.

The tongue-and-groove blocks are stacked over vertical steel rebar rods.

The blocks have horizontal and vertical channels for concrete, and metal "studs" to anchor exterior and interior wall coverings.

At the end of the day on August 9th, the lower level walls are started.

By August 16th, the lower level blocks are in place,
but this is just the beginning. The real work starts now.
