Finishing the dogrun - Smith-Zimmerman home

A new rendition
of an old Texas farmhouse feature. The "dogrun" or "dogtrot" is an open breezeway through the center of the house. During the summer, it magnifies the prevailing breezes to draw air through the other rooms of the house.

We used fiberglass grating
as flooring on the first and
second levels...

...to allow breezes to pass through freely.
Then the interior stonework was completed.

The Ipé stairtreads were installed...

...then the corrugated Galvalume
siding. The front door can barely
be seen on the right.

The high north
windows open to allow
rising warm air to exit.

Windows on the east side of the dogrun
provide a nice view into the tree canopy.

The south windows provide a nice
wintertime view of Moon Mountain
through bare cypress branches.

Lighting fixtures are installed to provide
pleasing nighttime illumination.
