Dead in the water!

The river rose to flood stage 6 times over six days, culminating in the 31 foot rise shown at right. In this shot Moon Mountain can be seen in the distance. The relatively flat land between the river and the mountain allows the river to spread in that direction and minimizes the chance of a rise above the floodplain on our side.

In the panorama below, a 25 foot rise in the river on July 2nd is visible beyond the house foundation. Work had come to a halt on the afternoon of June 29th because of rain and flooding. By July 5th Wimberley received 21.5" of rain.

Too bad our rainwater collection system wasn't in place. We could have filled it to overflowing with only a third of the water that came down.

A week earlier we were experiencing a drought. This is not a land of subtlety.

View from about where our front deck will be.
One of our stone retaining walls is in the foreground.
The river normally is beyond the trees seen in the middle of the water here.

Susie checking things out from the top of our stairs down to the river level of the property. Not far to the river now.
